AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX could finally dethrone Intel in mobile gaming

The soon-to-be-released AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX will be the Red Team’s flagship mobile processor this year. Now, even though we don’t have a launch date yet, the CPU has just been spotted in the benchmarks. And from what the numbers show, AMD could be extremely competitive in gaming laptops this year.

By the numbers, the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX outpaced last-gen equivalents by several miles. And the most interesting fact is that it managed to beat the best processors from Intel today. That too, with far fewer cores than the competition.

AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX takes the lead

The Zen 4 line of mobile processors was initially announced at the CES 2023 trade show. And although the announcement was very recent, it looks like the CPU is starting to show up in laptops. First, we saw the Ryzen 9 7845HX benchmark scores. And now we got the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX benchmark scores.

So what does the benchmark actually show? Well, the numbers are from Geekbench 5. But getting to that, let’s talk about the specs. The highlighted processor belongs to the gamer-oriented range, which is called “Dragon Range”. This flagship chip from AMD comes with 16 cores and 32 threads.

When it comes to clock speed, the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX can hit 5.4 GHz at 55 watts. But we expect it to increase when the chip uses its full TDP, which is 75 watts.

Compared to the previous generation, the new Ryzen 9 7945HX sees double the number of cores. Simply put, last year’s high-end AMD mobile chip came with 8 cores and 16 threads.

The laptop shown in the Geekbench 5 listing is Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 16. And in case you didn’t know, the Zephyrus Duo line consists of state-of-the-art laptops with dual screens. All models even come with the latest and greatest in terms of specifications. It is therefore not a surprise to see it appear with the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX.

However, we don’t really know which GPU the laptop was using. But judging by previous trends, Asus has probably integrated one of Nvidia’s top-ranked GPUs. The laptop also appears to have 32GB of DDR5 RAM.

That said, the laptop with the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX scored 2217 points in the single-core test and 19403 in the multi-core tests. These scores not only allow the laptop to reach the top positions in the rankings among laptops, but also among desktop processors. Yes, AMD is taking on the best desktop processors with the 7945HX.

Nevertheless, with such scores, the AMD 7945HX is currently the best mobile chip in terms of single-core performance. And the great part is that it’s not that far behind the Intel i9 13980HX in terms of multi-core testing.

However, the average score is a bit low. So if you consider that, Intel will actually be the winner. However, the lead between the Intel chip and the AMD 7945HX is not that big.

It’s also very interesting to see how the new chip closes in on the single-core Ryzen 9 7900X desktop. In fact, it almost follows the 7950X. And you can’t forget that there is a huge difference in terms of TDP.

We are talking about 55 watts versus 170 watts. So, in short, the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX does really well in these benchmarks. And we can’t wait for laptops with these chips to finally hit the wild.
